Zone Therapy

What is Zone Therapy?

Zone therapy is used as pressure point massage on feet or hands to allow the free flow of energy to the body’s organs.  Zone therapy is based on a theory by Dr. William Fitzgerald who noted that specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetic effect on another area. Developing this theory, he divided the body into ten equal vertical zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure on one part of the zone could affect everything else within that zone.

The Zones

The body is divided into ten zones, five on each side of the body running in straight paths of equal widths from the top of the head, down through the arms, hands, legs and feet as shown in the picture below.  Zones run longitudinally from top to bottom and also transversely from side to side.  The different zones correspond to the various internal and external organs in the body as well as physical and mental ailments.

A Zone Therapy Treatment

Zone therapy stimulates the blood flow around the body, thereby improving circulation to the body’s vital organs.  It can also improve balance between the body systems by reducing tension in the body and anxiety in the mind by increasing energy and reducing fatigue.  The ongoing benefits of zone therapy are thought to relate to holistic wellbeing by encompassing the whole person, including the mind, the physical structure of the body and spiritual health by cleansing the body by removing toxins.  The reflex points in zones one to five in the feet and hands are massaged by applying pressure at specific areas within each zone. These pressure points help the mind and body return to its natural pattern and achieve balance known as homeostasis. The techniques are used to stimulate the blood flow by increasing the oxygen supply, the lymphatic flow by filtering toxins and the nerve endings to improve co-ordination.
